The Aleppo pepper has a moderate heat level with some mild, fruity undertones. Its flavor is similar to the ancho chile but oilier and slightly salty.  Crushed Aleppo pepper can be used as a substitute for crushed red pepper or paprika.  The pepper is named after the city of Aleppo, Syria, but most of today's Aleppo pepper is grown in Turkey.
